DIY: zo maak je van het Basu dressoir een koffiecorner

Do you have a WOOOD favorite that’s ready for something new? With a creative DIY, you can easily give a familiar piece of furniture a fresh look. For this project, we got hands-on with the Basu sideboard: by tiling it, we transformed it into an atmospheric coffee corner. No major makeover, just smart use of materials and details. This way, you make your interior personal, refresh what you already own, and consciously choose a sustainable update.

From sideboard to dream coffee corner: here’s how to do it

Supplies:

  • Basu sideboard
  • Tiles of your choice: we used Vtwonen Villa Dark Gold metallic tiles 13×13 from Douglas & Jones
  • Tile adhesive (ready-mix)
  • Notched trowel
  • Tile leveling clips
  • Masking tape
  • Grout
  • Grout float
  • Bucket with water
  • Sponge
  • Dry, clean cloth

Step 1: Lay out the tiles

First, place the tiles loosely on the top of the sideboard. This way, you can immediately see whether the pattern works, if everything lines up nicely, and where you might need to cut tiles.

Step 2: Apply the tile adhesive

Using a notched trowel, spread an even layer of tile adhesive over the surface. Work calmly and make sure the adhesive is evenly distributed.

Step 3: Place the tiles

Place the tiles one by one into the adhesive and press them down firmly. Check regularly to ensure everything is straight.

Step 4: Insert tile clips and let it dry

Place tile leveling clips between the tiles for a clean, even result. Then let everything dry for 24 hours so the tiles can set properly.

Step 5: Tape the sides

Carefully tape off the sides of the furniture. This prevents grout from getting onto areas where you don’t want it.

Step 6: Apply the grout

Apply the grout with a grout float and spread it well over the joints.

Step 7: Clean with a damp sponge

Remove excess grout with a slightly damp sponge. Work carefully so the joints remain neat.

Step 8: Polish with a dry cloth

Finally, use a dry cloth to polish the surface. This removes any remaining grout residue and lets the tilework shine.

And your coffee corner is ready! With a little patience and creativity, you’ve given the Basu sideboard a completely new look. An ideal base for your coffee machine, styled with mugs and accessories that suit your taste. The result? A unique coffee corner that proves upcycling can be both stylish and sustainable.
